Peña Mea (1558 m)


the Ojo de Buey

A high mountain walk, with stunning views from the top, and a spectacular limestone feature – the Ojo de Buey. Route finding is difficult despite some waymarking. When you are finding the ascent difficult, think of the annual running race to the summit!

1.  Driving from Laviana, take the AS-252 from Entralgo to Villoria. From Tolivia drive up the LV-9 to Fresneo.
2.  From here there is a small track, which can be driven with care to Les Campes (890 m).
3.  Park here near the chapel and the bar "El Vaquero".
4.  Walk approximately 800 metres to the path junction. Here there is a signpost to the 2 cols which lie on either end of the main part of the route – Pelúgano and Doñango. There is also a red sign for the Asturias Interior GR 109 walking route (Section 10).
6. Choose the Doñango direction and follow the track with waymarks and signs to large Doñango col.
7. Turn RIGHT-SOUTH and ascend towards cliffs.
8. Look for painted waymarks to the right, guiding you to a path through the trees, keeping cliffs on your LEFT.
9. Follow a path bearing left through a grassy area to arrive at a broad col at about 1350 metres.
10. Drop slightly to follow a path and paint waymarks, keeping cliffs on your RIGHT.
11. Gradually ascend to the ridge above you, following tracks.
12. Follow the ridge upwards to the summit of Peña Mea (1558 m) with views of the Sierra del Aramo, the Picos de Europa and countless other mountain ranges.
13. Drop down from the summit on the WEST side, zig-zagging on a track left then right to a ridge, keeping the ridge on the right with views of the Tolivia valley.
14. Arrive at a large limestone tower, on the left is the spectacular limestone window - the Ojo de Buey.
15. Follow the zig-zag path down the large couloirs or gully – Canal de las Cuevas.
16. Before this becomes a narrow ravine, turn RIGHT and follow tracks WEST to reach the col Collado de Pelugano at 1017 metres.
17. Turn right and follow the vehicle track DOWNHILL/NORTH back to the path junction.
